New Intel Processors Threats MeeGo and Android
The new second generation Intel Atom processor was launched on 05/04/2010, aiming at the market of smartphones and tablet computers which is rapidly growing today. Intel enters into the market of smartphones and tablets because they already mastered at least two software platforms, Android and MeeGo (the combination of Intel Moblin and Nokia Maemo).
“As a founder of the Open Handheld Allaince (OHA), Intel has teamed up with Google for over the last few years and provide support for the Android platform when it launched,” Intel said in a statement released on 04/05/2010. OHA is an organization that supports the development of Android.
The characteristic of the Intel Atom processor Z6xx new series provides highly optimized to work on Android that could be used in all kinds of artificial devices that use the operating system. These processors are sold in packages that have been equipped by Mixed Signal IC and MP20.
“Platforms based on Intel Atom processor have been optimized to produce the best performance and experiences with very low power requirements on the Moblin software platform 2.1,” continued Intel.
Moblin 2.1 is a software platform based on open source (Linux) which designed by Intel for various types of handheld devices. Recently the development of Nokia Maemo Moblin and Intel equally based on open source mergers. Intel ensure that the new platform fully support with MeeGo.
Currently the closest competitors in the smartphone market is a platform widely used ARM processor manufacturers such as Qualcomm Snapdragon processor with 1 GHz. Samsung also has developed a capability commensurate with processors that are both based on the ARM architecture.
Atomic Generation 2 for ‘smartphones’ and Tablet
If Intel Atom processor-based platform more first generation aimed at net book, the second generation of Intel’s Atom (formerly known as Moorestown), this time aimed at the smartphone market and tablet computers. Intel officially announced the availability of the second generation Atom processors in the latest platform package starting on 05/04/2010.
This atomic generation has been re-partitioned to load Atom processor. This platform combine 45nm Atom core processor with video encodes and decodes 3-D graphics, and display in a single design. Processor-based low-power process technology and manufactured with 45 nm, with 140 million transistors.
In addition, this platform also includes MP20 Platform Controller Hub that supports multiple functions and system level block I / O. New platform has also been equipped with a Mixed Signal IC to integrate the separate power transmission and consolidate various analog and digital components. This integrated platform supports various operating systems and market segments, not just smartphones, but also the tablet computers and other handheld devices.
Ability classmate PC processor platform that can perform fast Internet access, multitasking, running full 1080p HD video quality, recording 720p HD video, 3-D graphics, video conferencing, and multi-point voice. However, on the other hand, reduced power needs up to 50 times smaller than previous generation platforms, reducing the power needed to run the audio data up to 20 times smaller and the reduction of power during browsing, and video scenarios up to 2-3 times smaller. With this power savings, the device can have a standby time of up to more than 10 days, until the second day of audio playback, and battery life for video browsing and up to five hours.
Stunning again, this new platform is able to work with frequencies up to 1.5 GHz for smartphones and up to 1.9 GHz for tablets and other handheld devices. This chip also supports 3G/HSPA, WiMAX, Wi-Fi, and also a variety of operating systems, especially Moblin, Android, and Meego.
