Oldest Fig Wasps Fossil Discovered

Scientists have discovered the oldest fossils of wasps in the world on the island of Isle of Wight, England. This Fig type of wasp allegedly 34 million years old and looks like a wasp that currently exist in general. That is, during that period, the animal’s form has not changed.

When discovered in 1920 on the island, the researchers had mistakenly identified the wasps such as ants. “But we have examined the return of molecular materials that these wasps have a relationship with the fig tree as long as 60 million years,” said Fig Wasps expert at the University of Leeds, England, Steve Compton.

Fig wasps are tiny insects. Body length measures just 0.06 inches or 1.5 millimeters. Animals can not live apart from the fig tree because it breeds in tree. It also helps pollination among the fig tree.
